Moms (the best ones)

Moms take care of their babies.
They comfort them, teach them, and hold their hand.
They say they love you no matter what
and they really mean it.
They pack lunches and cook dinner.
They listen to your thoughts
and know the perfect thing to say in return.

And then sometimes, Moms go over and beyond their motherly duties.
They sacrifice by leaving their own home,
their husband,
their job,
their friends,
to come to your house and live out a suitcase for five weeks
to help you while you take care of your own new babies.

They make 16 freezer meals for your freezer
and make you lunch and dinner nearly every day.

They set their alarm for 6am every morning,
and bring orange juice and a granola bar to your bed
and let you sleep for four hours,
taking care of the babies the entire time.

They change poopy diapers,
cheer for burps,
and laugh when sticky breast milk is spit up
and drips down their leg to their ankle
or all over their brand new shirt from Ross.

They let you bounce off all kind of ideas and worries
about feeding, sleeping, spitting up,
and every other baby related thing under the sun.

They humor you and calm you
when you keep changing your mind
about the best way to do things,
and when you panic about not knowing what to do,
and give you the most valuable advice in the whole wide world
which is to get off the internet
and just follow your own mommy-gut.

They do so much laundry
that you run out of the giant baby detergent carton
and teach you the secret to getting every stain out of every garment.

They clean your house, even your toilets,
and keep the kitchen more sparkling then you ever could.

They makes you feel better about your after-baby body,
and tell you your stretch marks aren't that bad
and that your belly looks small
and it makes you feel so much better
even though you know they are lies. :)

They teach you all about taking care of babies
how to make bath time fun...
the creative way to take tight onsies off so it's not scary...
the greatest way to burp...
and remind you again to

They are your greatest cheerleader,
constantly encouraging and loving you,
even when you cry over spilled (and spit up) milk.

I knew my mom would come and help me take care of my babies
but looking back over the past five weeks,
I can't help but notice that every single day,
she also took care of me,
and I am so thankful for all of the sacrifices and love
that she continuously gave
each and every moment
of every day
to me and my little family.

And I truly believe that
if I can even be half of the mom to my girls
that my mom has been to me,
these girls will be the luckiest girls in all the land.

Happy (Month) Birthday!

happy one month birthday Ava and Molly.

every day that you have been alive
has been better than every Christmas, birthday, and vacation combined.
you bring joy to my life every day
and it still seems like a dream
that God answered my prayers for a baby
by giving me you two beautiful girls.

i love hearing you coo to one another
and flail your arms and legs all around out of excitement
and hearing you starting to coo at me and your daddy.

i love watching you follow "mr. cow man"
(the name given to our favorite rattly, squeaky black and white baby toy)
and see your little eyes pop out
when i sing my silly made up cow man song.

i am sad that we had to put your going home outfits away
because you don't fit in them anymore,
but then again, i'm excited too...
i can't believe you've been out of my belly for a month
and you already have grown so much.

you may be two tiny babies
but you take up my whole heart
and i am totally in love with both of you.

happy one month birthday sweet girls.

new babies. first day home.

shocked at how much we grew!

Four Weeks Old: A Drama

this is a story
of two sisters who got their four week old picture taken.

somebody (whose name rhymes with mava) did not want her picture taken.
her sweet sister molly tried to calm her down.

ava didn't want to be calmed down.

not at all. this shocked molly
though i'm not sure why.
ava possibly is one dramatic baby.

molly tried whispering comforting words to her sister.

but ava wanted nothing to do with it.

finally molly convinced ava to calm down
by explaining that they would get to eat
if she would just settle down for the picture.

ava likes to eat 8(ish) times a day.
dear heavens, that's a lot of times.
but hey.... she loves milk.
look at this girl's face.
one mention of food and she is all smiles.

finally, the ordeal was over.
molly was exhausted after all her hard work with ava
and decided to take a nap.
ava daydreamed about her table for one reservation.
mommy finally got the picture she was waiting for...
though she quickly realized
that the girls had been picture perfect
all along.

Three Weeks Old

"Sleepy by Day"

and p.s.- we never pose them.
what you see is truly what happens.
real life.
and i love that even their bodies match.

Week Two in Review

this past week, the girls have found their tongues.
they keep sticking them in and out
and wiggling them about.
and it's adorable to watch.
i just can't take the cuteness.

awake time has become more meaningful.
they are more alert
and can follow a rattle
or a familiar voice
or music.

the girls grunt at each other.
it's like they have a secret language.

the other day,
dan grunted back at ava
to see what she would do...
and she grunted back at dan!
and they grunted and grunted and grunted.

and their grunts were both
hysterical and amazing to me.
ava seemed so smart
and dan seemed like a cave man.
and i loved it.

another first this week-
my little Molly got a cold.
and it breaks my heart.
i'm praying that she gets back to herself
as soon as possible.
she is still content and sweet
but a little sicker and a little sadder.

i am so thankful for these sweet little lives.
i am truly blessed
by a great God
whose plan for my life
is turning out much grander and lovelier
than i could ever have written for myself.
and i love the little blessings
He places in my little life
each and every day.

Growing Babies

We are doing weekly pictures with the girls.
The idea was to do it at the same time of day
to make sure the lighting stayed the same,
but already,
our new life has shown me
that doing things at the exact time of day
is just not going to always happen.
This is bringing out a new "loosey goosey" side of me
and it's been fun. :)

*Ava is on the left and Molly is on the right*

Week one and two are getting posted together
because Aperture has been wonky and crashing a lot
and finally, my superhero husband fixed it
after many attempts and attacks.
He really is my superhero.
You should see him with the babies.
Today, Ava was having an off day
and the minute her daddy scooped her up
and said hello,
she was all eyes and no cries.
He is already her superhero, too.

Our girls are precious and I just love them. We are so blessed.

Week 1- Still in our sleepy baby stage...

Week 2- This is obviously before daddy came home today...
in all of our defenses, however,
we weren't all tears all day...
unless your name rhymed with mava. :)
poor girl. it's tough being 14 days old.
But that just meant mom got to cuddle with her extra.
making it a wonderful day. <3
For the picture, molly decided to sympathize with her sister.
she's a sweetie like that.
